I have to say that cardigans are my favorite thing ever. They can completely change your outfit and take it from cozy to chic. From a morning running errands to drinks with your friends. They also just make a great finishing touch to any look, and they are the perfect accessory for spring (or fall) days when you go from chill to warm to chill again and are way less cumbersome to drag about than a jacket.
I know what some of you are thinking, cardigan are for your grandparents or stuffy college professor or that lady at the library, but don’t write them off just yet. You know that buzzword- hygge. Cardigans are totally in that cozy category. Let me tell you a little about some different cardigan styles and outfit pairings that you can create with them. Hopefully with these tips you’ll feel confident using your cardigans to assist your different looks with some function and style. The sample links come from Target- the best and worst place to walk the aisles (depending on if you ask my husband or me).
Basic cardigans are what you probably picture when thinking about cardigans. They are sort of plain, not too fitted, not too loose, and they are seriously the most perfect things ever. They go with everything. I seriously have like three of these all in the exact same shade of navy, the only difference between them is material. You can get these in different lengths and they work for anything, jeans and tees, jeggings and camis, leggings and tanks, dress pants and a nice shell. One basic cardigan in a nice neutral color can have endless pairings.
Drapey, fitted cardigans are some of my favorite layering pieces. Here’s why- they tend to be a little lighter than other cardigans and while the sleeves may be fitted the cut tends to be overly flattering on most figures. They usually have a good silhouette while also not being form fitting around the waist and hips. These types are great for pairing with yoga pants or leggings and a cute shirt or tank for everyday errands. But they also work well with cute fitted jeans or jeggings and a fancy shirt for a mom’s night out or a laid back date night.
Big, thick, over-sized cardigans are like being able to walk around out in public wrapped up in your favorite cozy blanket – and you get no weird looks from others for it. They are perfect for lounging around the house over your pajamas, wrapping up in to go for a walk or a park play date, or for an early morning trip to the farmer’s market or an outside coffee date with your friends. That’s almost everything right? This is another type of cardigan that pairs well with just about any outfit you wear it with.
The mom cardigan is the one you are probably picturing little old ladies or librarians wearing. They aren’t very fitted, sometimes the sleeves feel a little short. AND they have those shiny pearl or rounded buttons. They also tend to hit right between the hips and waist in length. These types of cardigans tend to work really well with a high-waisted pant, like trousers, jeans, or a skirt that sits at your waist. They can work with a cropped shirt. They also pair great with dresses. These tend to be my go-to cardigan with sundresses to get the longest use out of my favorites in spring and fall.
Cardigans really are a great way to get the most out of your summer wardrobe in transitional months. Spring, fall: cardigans for all. For any look you want, there’s a cardigan for that. Hopefully, this inspires you to get out and try my favorite cozy accessory!
